Why Storage Planning Is One of the Most Important Design Decisions
There is a moment, in every kitchen we've designed, when a client opens a drawer for the first time after install and goes quiet for a second longer than they expected to. The drawer is fitted. The spices are labeled. The spatulas have their own slot. The mixing bowls nest into a divider that was built to hold those specific bowls. The drawer is not just deep storage. It is a room within a room, every interior surface organized for the specific life that is going to be lived in this kitchen.
That moment is, in our work, the single most reliable predictor of how much a client will love their finished kitchen. Not the stone they chose. Not the hardware. Not the range or the hood or the pendant over the island. The interior of the drawer.
This is the most overlooked decision in luxury residential design, and it is the entire reason custom home interior design, done correctly, does not stop at the exterior of the cabinet door.
The Interior of a Kitchen Is the Lining of a Couture Coat
In couture, the lining of a coat is hand-stitched by someone whose job is exclusively to make the inside of the garment as considered as the outside. You will not see it from across the room. You will feel it every time you put the coat on. The lining is what tells you the garment was made for a body that someone respected, by hands that knew what they were doing.
Cabinetry works the same way. The outside of the cabinet, the door style, the wood, the finish, the hardware, is the runway view. The inside of the cabinet, the drawer dividers, the pull-outs, the interior fittings, the way each cubic inch has been considered for the specific objects it will hold, is the lining. The runway view sells the kitchen. The lining is what determines whether you actually live in it.

The pull-out spice drawer adjacent to the cooktop. Not in a high cabinet across the room. Two steps from where seasoning actually happens, with every jar labeled, every label facing the user, the entire system fitted to the exact width of the rail it slides on.
The integrated trash and recycling pull-out with a cabinet face that matches the rest of the run. No exposed bin. No awkward swing door. A clean, integrated solution that respects the architecture of the kitchen even in service of a function nobody wants to think about.
The appliance garage. A dedicated, ventilated compartment for the toaster, the espresso machine, the kettle, the blender, appliances that get daily use, with outlets inside, so they are accessible without sitting on the counter eroding the visual cleanliness of the room.
The walk-in or step-in butler's pantry. Pulled directly off the kitchen, stocked for the way this family actually entertains — open shelves for the platters used at every dinner party, drawers for table linens, a designated zone for the coffee setup that gets used every morning.
The knife storage drawer. Not a block on the counter. An angled in-drawer system that protects the blades, conceals them when not in use, and frees the counter for what counters are actually for.
The under-island charging station. Concealed, ventilated, with outlets and USB-C, where the household phones and tablets live at night.
Each of these decisions is invisible from across the room. All of them are felt, every day, by the family living in the kitchen.
Why Storage Is a Custom Home Interior Design Decision, Not an Afterthought
