A custom home is not decorated at the end. It is programmed before it is planned — and everything about how we work follows from that one conviction.

Over the years we have refined our process into nine phases, and we are going to do something design firms rarely do: walk you through all of it. Every phase, every meeting, every deliverable — the full rundown, idea to reality. This post is the map. Each phase links to its own deep dive, publishing as an ongoing series.

One thing before the map. Great custom interior design requires process. There will be moments in any project when it feels slower than you would naturally prefer. That pace is not a formality — it is what protects the result. We are most useful to our clients when the design is allowed to develop thoughtfully, rather than rushed toward answers before the work is ready. If you read the nine phases below and feel relief rather than impatience, we are probably going to get along wonderfully.

The Nine Phases

Phase I — Programming + Discovery. Before a single plan is drawn, we gather the data: how you actually live, what each room has to hold, what this house is meant to be. Your architect is introduced to our process, your Design Schedule is built, and everything that follows becomes this understanding, translated.

Phase II — Space Planning + The Black and White Meeting. Every viable layout, explored. Plans presented in black and white — no finishes, no color — so nothing competes with the spatial solution. Plans settle here.

Phase III — Design Development. Every room, fully developed: millwork detailed, items defined, blocking noted, long-lead items flagged early, every decision documented as it is made rather than reconstructed later.

Phase IV — Finishes + Form + Beauty. Finishes come after development, by design. Once we know how a space works, the materials follow — drawn, not just selected, inside and out.

Phase V — The Final Reveal. The complete house presented space by space: plans, elevations, photo-realistic renderings, samples you can touch. The design is signed off. Nothing moves forward without your approval.

Phase VI — Construction Documentation. Everything approved becomes the Builder's Handbook — reviewed with your architect first, then your builder, in that order. Your builder is never asked to work from a set that is still moving.

Phase VII — Design Implementation. Ordering, tracking, expediting. Everything received, inspected, and stored at our climate-controlled receiving warehouse until installation day. You will never be left wondering — weekly Project Summary emails see to that.

Phase VIII — Construction Administration. We are your quality assurance on site: field questions answered the day they come up, surprises handled with fast, on-the-fly solutions. The build never waits on design.

Phase IX — Completion, Installation + Celebration. It's time. Everything placed, everything styled, down to the last object — because a house is not finished when the furniture arrives; it is finished when the last object is in the right place.

Why We Work This Way

Because order is what makes creativity safe to spend money on. Form and function are decided before finishes. Finishes are decided before pricing. Pricing is decided before ordering. Ordering is complete before installation. Every phase closes before the next one leans on it — which is why our clients across Boulder, from the Country Club area north of town to the historic core; in Broomfield, from Wildgrass to Anthem; and throughout Superior, Erie, and Golden get to enjoy their build instead of managing it.

It is our belief that it is better to wait and do it correctly than to rush to the finish line. Nine phases is what "correctly" looks like, written down.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the full process take?

It scales with the home — several months of design before construction, then implementation running alongside the build. The Design Schedule built in Phase I puts every meeting on the calendar from the start, so you always know what is coming.

Do I need all nine phases?

Renovations and furnishing projects travel the same road with fewer miles — some phases compress. New construction uses every one, and rewards every one.

Where do you work?

Our studio is based in Broomfield — Wildgrass is minutes from our door — serving Boulder and the Boulder Country Club area, Superior, Erie, Golden, and the surrounding Front Range communities.

Where does the process start?

With a conversation about fit — this is an intimate process, and alignment is everything. Inquire with our studio and we will begin there.
